Bernardin de Saint Pierre in his famous novel "Paul et Virginie" written in 1786, immortalised the ship Saint Géran.  According to the author, the ship wreck occurred in a violent storm.  The heroine, Virginie, is inexorably linked to the Saint Géran and today this fictional character is believed by some to have been an actual passenger on the Saint Géran and the story of Bernardin de Saint Pierre a true account of the events of 17th-18th August 1744.
